Crossroads at Big Creek (crossroadsatbigcreek.org) is offering Archaeology by Appointment at The Cove Preserve, 817 S. 20th Place in Sturgeon Bay, on Oct. 9. This is a chance to participate in an authentic archaeological dig by helping to excavate a test unit, which appears to date back to the Late Woodland period. Sign up for a 45-minute slot between 9 am and 4 pm.
Archaeology by Appointment is also available Oct. 12-13 at the Door County Historical Society’s Hanson Norwegian Homestead. Time slots are available between 9 am and 4 pm. For both of these opportunities, youth participants must be in grade six or older, but all ages are invited to observe. Masks are required.
On Oct. 10, 9-10:30 am, Wild Ones of Door County will host a weed and seed-gathering party, during which participants who weed may collect and take home seeds from the garden. A mask is required, and social distancing will be maintained. Supply your own gloves, tools and water bottle. Meet at the Collins Learning Center.
Volunteers – working outside and well distanced – will pull buckthorn and remove the seed heads from phragmites on Saturdays, 10 am – 12 pm. Equipment, clean gloves and instructions are provided. Masks are required. Meet at the workshop.
