Primary Election Results Pending

The August 14 primary election revealed a close race for the democratic nomination for the Wisconsin 1st Assembly District to face republican incumbent Garey Bies in November. In ballots cast at the polls, Patrick Veeser was ahead of Arnie Johnsrud by 31 votes, but he hasn’t officially been named the victor.

“[The numbers] were up and down, and up and down,” Veeser said. “He was a good opponent.”

Absentee ballots are still trickling in, and they could change the results. Johnsrud could still be the one running against Bies in November.

Johnsrud has no plans to concede the race until official election results are released by Wednesday, Aug. 22.

“I think it’s only fair to our supporters that we wait it out at least until we have official numbers,” Johnsrud said.

The other contested race on the primary election ballot was for republican U.S. Senate nomination. Tommy Thompson, who received 34 percent of the vote, led the race by 18,141 votes over Eric Hovde, the candidate in second place.
