Primary Narrows Fields for April Election

Voters narrowed the fields Feb. 21 for the April 4 election in four Door County municipalities. The top vote-getters will now advance to the April 4 election.

Below are the results for Sister Bay, Gibraltar, Nasewaupee and Gardner, as well as the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Village of Sister Bay

Seven candidates ran for three seats, requiring the elimination of the one person who received the fewest votes.

The votes were as follows: Patrice M. Champeau, 182 votes; Lilly Orozco, 152 votes; Alison Werner, 139 votes; Vivian Nienow, 101 votes; Andrew Torcivia, 128 votes; Sarah White, 95 votes; and Nick Deviley, 87 votes.

Total votes cast were 889, including five write-ins.

The village board appointed White to an open trustee seat, but because that appointment came after she had filed, her name remained on the primary ballot. Now she’ll advance to the April ballot.

“Once a person files to run, there is no turning back,” said Door County clerk Jill Lau.

If White finishes in the top three spots in the April election, she would not have a choice between the elected and appointed seats. A top finish for White April 4 “creates a vacancy that the [Sister Bay village] board will need to fill by appointment,” said Heidi Teich, village clerk. “She [White] does not get to choose between the current appointment she has accepted and the elected term.”

Town of Gibraltar

Five people ran for two supervisor seats, requiring the elimination of the one person with the fewest votes.

The votes were as follows: Thomas M. Birmingham, 353 votes; Vinni Chomeau, 280 votes; Brian Merkel, 119 votes; John Selenica, 87 votes; and Karl M. Stubenvoll, 81 votes.

Total votes cast were 920, with no write-ins.

Town of Nasewaupee

There were two primaries in Nasewaupee. Three candidates ran for the Supervisor 1 seat and four for the Supervisor 2 seat. Each seat required the elimination of the one person who received the fewest votes.

The votes were as follows for the Supervisor 1 seat: Mark Hilsabeck, 201 votes; Bill Krueger, 146 votes; and Mike Martell, 79 votes.

Total votes cast were 428, including two write-ins.

The votes were as follows for the Supervisor 2 seat: Don Sixel Jr., 149 votes; Mark Feuerstein, 129 votes; Lance Brolin, 93 votes; and George Sincock, 81 votes.

Total votes cast were 453, including one write-in.

Town of Gardner

Three candidates ran for the Supervisor 3 seat, requiring the elimination of the one person who received the fewest votes.

The votes were as follows: Mike Marchant, 159 votes; Mark Lentz, 83 votes; and Gary Schaeffer, 33 votes.

Total votes cast were 276, including one write-in.

Wisconsin Supreme Court

The primary race for a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat went to the top two vote-getters out of four candidates. With 95% of the votes reported as of the deadline for this issue of the Peninsula Pulse, the liberal-leaning Janet Protasiewicz had captured 46.4% of the statewide vote, with conservatives Daniel Kelly and Jennifer Dorow at 24.2% and 21.9%, respectively, and Everett Mitchell, also a liberal, at 7.5%.

In Door County, voters went for Protasiewicz (3,497 votes); Daniel Kelly (1,891 votes); Jennifer Dorow (1,110 votes); and Everett Mitchell (431 votes).
