Profile of Door County Golfer Charlie Imig

I met Charlie on one of my visits to Washington Island – he was recommended to me by many Islanders as a good “character” for the Player Profile. As a longtime employee of the Kohler Company in Sheboygan, Charlie informed me of his “magic pass.” Because of his job, he was able to play all of Kohler’s courses to entertain clients…including The Irish Course, Whistling Straits, and Black Wolf Run.

Age: Born in 1943

Occupation: Retired Senior Account Executive – employed by Kohler for 38 years

Hometown: Washington Island and Sturgeon Bay

Home Course: Deer Run, Washington Island and proud of it!

Handicap: I don’t keep one

How long have you been playing golf: Since the early ‘60s when I was in high school

Hole-in-one(s)?: Never

Favorite course ever played?: Whistling Straits – it is incredible. I also enjoy the courses on the Robert Trent Jones Trail. (I had the chance to play Augusta once, but had to turn it down because of a work obligation).

Share a favorite golf memory with us: I was entertaining customers – kind of a lot of “big wigs.” I had a bag of tees of all different colors. All the colored tees were normal except the black ones were flat tees (flat tees are a gag tee in which the ball cannot stand). The first person to tee off was the President of the Engine Division and he picked out a black tee. He kept trying to tee his ball up…I could not stop laughing – he was so mad at me.

Favorite pro player: Arnold Palmer – he’s a real gentleman – you can’t say that about all of the new players today. I had the honor of meeting him once.

Who’s your caddy: Harvey Penick because he’s all about the basics.

Your game strengths: I just got a new driver, so I’ll say my driving.

What needs work: Everything

Golf tip to share: Swing hard and look up!

What’s in the bag?: More clubs than legal, Power Bar, chewing gum, cigars, lighter, a rain slicker, plenty of change, and a Sharpie marker.
