• The organizers of National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo – the annual November write-a-thon during which authors write a novel in a month – have created a new initiative called StayHomeWriMo. Visit to see a daily checklist of four activities: A writing prompt provides guidance for creative work, and the others promote mental, physical and social well-being.

• If you’re looking for a little brightness in your day, turn to Sir Patrick Stewart. He’s reading a Shakespearean sonnet each day and posting it to social media. Stewart is known for his role as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and is big in London’s theater scene.

• Book sales have leapt across the country as readers find they have extra time on their hands, and bookshops are reporting a significant increase in the sales of longer novels and classic fiction. Some popular picks have been One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy.
