• The Baylake Bank Premier Club and the Door County YMCA are sponsoring an informational program, “YOUR AGING EYES,” at the Sturgeon Bay branch of the YMCA on Wednesday, July 15 from 9:45 – 10:45 am. J. Eric Paulsen, O.D. an optometrist with Door County Eye Associates, will be the program presenter, and he will focus on different eye diseases and conditions that can happen to people as they age. Paulsen is a graduate of Illinois College of Optometry and has practiced in Sturgeon Bay for 26 years. To register for this free program at the Door County YMCA, 1900 Michigan St., Sturgeon Bay, please call the YMCA at 920.743.4949 or Barbara Malzahn at Baylake Bank Conference Center at 920.743.5551. Refreshments will be served and door prizes given away.

 

The Clark Lake Advancement Association will be holding its annual meeting and picnic during mid-July. The annual meeting is scheduled for Saturday, July 11 at the Jacksonport Town Hall at 9 am. All members and interested parties are invited to attend. Then, the Annual Clark Lake Advancement Association Picnic will be held on Saturday, July 18 at Lakeside Park in Jacksonport at 11 am. All members, guests, and individuals interested in joining the association are invited to attend.

 

• Everyone is invited to attend the Door County Humane Society’s Shimmy for the Shelter fundraiser on Thursday, August 6 at 6:30 pm. The event will be held on the beautiful grounds of Cajun Acres Estate in Carlsville. The evening will feature alfresco Mediterranean dining with culinary delights from 12 of the finest Door County Restaurants, as well as an open wine bar. Guests will be entertained by the music of Global Accord, which will accompany the Kaheena Belly Dancers. There will be a special guest performance by Cambria Byrd and her dancing dog, Pug Joe! Guests are asked to support the Door County Humane Society by purchasing tax-deductible tickets of $75 per person. A limited number of tickets are available so interested parties are asked to contact the shelter as soon as possible to reserve their spot. Table sponsorships are also available. • The Leadership Door County organization has announced that they are currently accepting applications for their 2009-2010 program. Selected participants will have the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills, learn about Door County resources and increase their community involvement. The Leadership Door County program begins in September with an overnight retreat and ends in June with another. During these participants engage in activities designed for personal development and team-building. Participants then meet one day per month from October through May to learn about aspects of the Door County community.

In addition to participating in the monthly meetings, class members are asked to complete a team-directed class project, with the goal of addressing a previously unmet need in the community.

Zion United Methodist Church will hold an old-fashion hymn sing at 6:30 pm Sunday, July 19 to benefit Door County Habitat for Humanity’s Apostle Build Program. The hymn sing, which started in 1993 at the 134-year-old country church, will feature a selection of old-time hymns selected by those in attendance. Rev. Don Heeringa, a former Zion pastor, will serve as song leader with Joan Vahey at the organ. The entire community is invited to attend, and refreshments will be served. The free-will offerings will benefit the Door County Apostle Build program of Habitat for Humanity. Zion is located at 8781 County F, between Baileys Harbor and Fish Creek.

 

The Door County String Academy (DCSA) is now accepting new students for the 2009 – 2010 school year. DCSA is a non-profit music school providing positive, professional music instruction to youth of Door County, ages 8-18.
