Book Recommendation: ‘Saga’ by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples (illustrator)

Recommended by Grace Johnson, Peninsula Pulse staffer and bibliophile

One of my favorite reads of 2020, Saga is an epic space adventure that is a sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find its place in the universe.

Husband and wife Marko and Alana are deserters from opposing armies of a galactic war. They meet during the war, and after a forbidden romance, welcome the birth of their daughter, Hazel. Soon after, the family becomes a target for agents working on both sides of the war.

Saga has earned critical acclaim and has been noted for its diverse portrayal of ethnicity, sexuality and gender social roles and its treatment of war. Because of the graphic material in this series, however, I would not recommend it for young readers.

The best part? After a hiatus since 2018, the series has started up again, with the latest issue being released Jan. 26.
