‘Reason for the Season’ at Bargains Unlimited

“I can’t wait to do it again next year!” exclaimed Kristine Kordon, co-manager of Bargains Unlimited, Northern Door’s resale shop.

What is it that Kristine can’t wait for? It is the “Reason for the Season” partnership between Bargains Unlimited and the Boys and Girls Club of Door County.

Children ages six to 17 spent Sunday afternoon, Dec. 13, holiday shopping for family members at Bargains Unlimited in Sister Bay. There were 33 volunteers, including Santa Claus, to help 39 kids choose and wrap their gifts.

“The older kids were mentors,” explained Rachael Van Valkenburg, co-manager of Bargains Unlimited. “It was heartwarming to see the smiles on the faces of the girls and boys. The children chose gifts ranging from jewelry to clothes, tools to golf clubs, and candles to sleeping bags. The golf clubs were a challenge to wrap!” said Rachael, with a twinkle in her eye. “Bargains has everything, so they had plenty of gifts to choose from.”

Kristine Kordon laughs as she explains the number one question from the children, “‘Can we buy something for our dog?’ Yes, Bargains even has gifts/items for pets!”

Donations for the event were plentiful: The boys and girls were transported to and from Sturgeon Bay in a Babler bus. Bargains’ volunteers made cookies, and the Boys and Girls Club brought sandwiches. The Piggly Wiggly in Sister Bay provided juice boxes, candy canes, chips and bags.

“Each child went home with a stuffed animal. I went home with a smile on my face and joy in my heart,” said Rachael.

“We want to thank Bargins Unlimited for providing a wonderful experience for our members”, said Julie Davis, Boys and Girls Club of Door County executive director, ”This event not only gives our members a chance to shop for much needed items for their families, but helps them experience the joy of giving this holiday season.”
