Registration Open for 2011 Washington Island Canoe and Kayak Event

Registration is open for the 3rd Annual Washington Island Canoe and Kayak Event, taking place June 17 – 19. In addition to a Marathon Race and Half Marathon Race, the event will include competitive, educational and social events.

Friday evening racers will fill up with a pasta dinner and enjoy the Red Barn’s season opener blues guitarist Keith Scott.

A Guided Eco Tour, merging the joys of paddling with the natural history of Detroit Harbor will be offered Saturday afternoon. Terri Cooper, naturalist and Land Program Director for the Door County Land Trust, will again lead the flotilla. Saturday evening, Roy Lukes, popular Door County naturalist and author, will present a program entitled “Door County Seasons” at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center.

Woodworker and paddler Bonnie Burnham of Washington Island will instruct the Greenland Kayak Paddle Building Workshop, a five-day workshop beginning Monday, June 13 through Friday, June 17. All materials will be supplied and no experience is necessary.

Sunday, June 19 the Crossing Death’s Door Expedition will launch from the Potato Dock on Washington Island’s southwest tip.

The Washington Island Canoe and Kayak Event is a volunteer effort organized through Lake Adventures Uniting Nature and Children with Hospitality (LAUNCH), Inc.
