Carollynn Lopez has published her first book, Livingston’s Tales: The Beginning, with illustrations by 102-year-old Scandia Village resident Florence Thoms. The work is based on Lopez’s family and set in her childhood home.
Having just moved to a small town in Illinois from the big city of Orlando, Kel has yet to make friends. To help, Grammy gives him a surprise: a stuffed bunny friend named Livingston.
“As a parent, getting children interested in reading from a young age is extremely important to me,” said Lopez. “I also believe that having a vast vocabulary is integral to a successful life! That is why I chose to use some words that may be more advanced than those found in other books for early chapter readers. The more difficult words are marked with an asterisk and can be found in the glossary at the back of the book.”
