Rhys Kuzdas to Present on Sturgeon Bay Ships in WWII

Door County Maritime Museum curator Rhys Kuzdas will present “Built For Battle: Sturgeon Bay Ships in WWII” on March 5, 7 pm, as the latest installment in Door County Medical Center’s Maritime Speaker Series.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. As a center of shipbuilding during this tumultuous time, Sturgeon Bay produced hundreds of vessels to supply the war effort.

Digging deeper into the events highlighted in the museum’s new exhibit, Built for Battle, this presentation will go into the storied history of those ships. The exhibit brings to life stories of bravery, sacrifice and tragedy aboard small ships during great engagements upon the waves. Kuzdas will explore what happened to these vessels – almost none of which returned to the Great Lakes.

A U.S. Navy veteran and avid travel and history enthusiast, Kuzdas has volunteered and worked at nonprofits and historical societies abroad and in Wisconsin.

The Maritime Speaker Series is held in the Reddin Bridge Room of the Door County Maritime Museum, 120 N. Madison Ave. in Sturgeon Bay.  Admission is free with a suggested nonperishable food donation.
