Rock Island Friends Hosting Annual Picnic

The group is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Pottawatomie Lighthouse Museum, and its 30-year anniversary as a Friends group

The Friends of Rock Island State Park will host their Annual Fundraiser Fun Day Picnic event on July 6 from 10 am – 3 pm.

The picnic will include a brat fry, a silent auction in the Thordarson Boathouse, merchandise sales and activities for all ages.

A historic artifact from Chester Thordarson, who owned the island after 1910 and had the Boathouse built, will also be celebrated – a taxidermied bald eagle. The Friends group recently funded a display case and table for the eagle, and it’s back in the Thordarson Boathouse.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 1 pm in its honor.

“We also are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Pottawatomie Lighthouse Museum this whole season with special limited edition merchandise,” said Tina Jacoby, Friends president. “The Friends of Rock Island State Park, in collaboration with the DNR, helped to spearhead the restoration of the lighthouse and officially opened it for a museum in 2004.”

Finally, the Friends group is also celebrating its 30-year anniversary this year, having first established in 1994.
