Gibraltar Schools are closed today due to a contained propane fire on the roof of the middle school gym that began between 4:00 and 4:30 am. Fire trucks from all county departments responded quickly to contain the fire within one HVAC unit. There is no damage to the school. The Door County Sheriff’s Department announced the school’s closure at 6:30 am.
Superintendent Tina Van Meer said the school believes a large amount of ice and/or snow fell off of the roof of the middle school gym and damaged a propane line on the roof, which leaked into the HVAC unit and ignited a fire.
As a result, there was a lot of smoke within the school. Odors remain in the middle school gym but have been cleared throughout the rest of the building.
There is no issued E-learning day, and the closure will not affect all after-school activities. The only cancellations are the late-bus route and middle school girls’ basketball practice. The math meet, girls’ high school basketball practice and the boys’ basketball game are still on, including the scheduled school board meeting.
“I wish to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all the Door County fire departments for the quick response early this morning,” Van Meer said. “They were able to quickly extinguish the fire and prevent it from penetrating the roof and school building.”
