Rosenfeld Featured in Final Week of Art League’s Gallery Season

The Gallery of the Door County Art League’s final featured artist of the season will be JoAnne Rosenfeld. An artist who uses a variety of media, Rosenfeld’s work will be highlighted starting October 4.

Rosenfeld, a self-taught artist who began copying comics out of the Sunday newspaper at age four, works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, charcoal, pencil, and pen and ink.

“My Orange Crush,” watercolor, by JoAnne Rosenfeld.

She says, “Once I get an idea for a painting, I then decide which media is appropriate. Often, I’ll do the same painting in two or three mediums; but there is always one that stands out as better than the others.”

Rosenfeld, born and raised in Mississippi, won first, second, and third place in a statewide poster contest her senior year of high school. After high school, she exhibited her work in many venues and sold her art at various art shows. Although she continued to paint and draw, her artistic career was put on hold as she spent many years in the corporate world. It wasn’t until her and her husband became permanent residents of Door County in 2005 that she began exhibiting again.

Her favorite subjects are animals, sports, landscapes, and seascapes and she recently began finger painting with water-mixable oils. She says she enjoys the freedom and looseness of the medium. Her “fingertip flora and fauna” can be seen at the gallery.

All types of original art produced by about 40 members are on display and available for sale at the Gallery of the Door County art League located in the Top of the Hill Shops in Fish Creek. Business hours are 10 am – 5 pm daily. The gallery will close for the season on Monday, October 12, and will reopen in May 2010.
