Sailor Identified as De Pere Man

At about 8:30 pm on May 13, the Door County Sheriff’s Dept. was notified of a sailboat that had washed ashore near Wood Lane and N. Stevenson Pier Roads. The boat was about 50 feet offshore in about five feet of water. B.U.G. Fire launched its rescue boat and boarded the vessel, finding no one aboard. Subsequent investigation found that the owner of the boat had been out on Green Bay sailing by himself since 1:30 pm and was headed back to dock at Wave Pointe Marina. A search of the Bay waters was conducted with boats from B.U.G. Fire, Door County Sheriff, Sturgeon Bay Police and Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard also had a helicopter searching the Bay. At about 9:30 am the next day, the Coast Guard helicopter located a body in the water off of Bittersweet Road in the Town of Gardner. The body recovered from the shore was identified as 59-year-old Stuart Keys of De Pere. The cause of death is pending the final medical examiner’s report.
