Scandia Village and Rotary Club Partner to Send Goods to Madagascar

On Dec. 9, several Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Door County North loaded a semi-truck full of electric beds to be shipped from Good Samaritan Society – Scandia Village in Sister Bay to Ohio and finally to Madagascar. Administrator Michele Notz had reached out to the Rotary group looking for a solution for the 50 electric beds that had been recently replaced. “We were able to replace our electric beds this past fall, but we wanted to make sure the old ones were still going to be used,” said Notz. “I reached out to the Rotary Club to see if they could help find a use for them.” Club president Stan Whiteman responded with an emphatic, “Yes! I don’t know how yet, but we can help.”

With that, Whiteman began talking with others and then eventually connected with Rev. Sue Gunderson of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Baileys Harbor. Rev. Gunderson has taken two trips to Madagascar, with her third planned in January. With her experience and connections to the country, she explained the great need for items like these and the destination was finalized. In addition to the beds, two dental chairs were also donated by Joel Eggert.

The items would be loaded from Sister Bay on a semi-truck and then taken to Ohio. Then, with help from Rotary District 6600 in Northwest Ohio, these items will be combined with others collected by the district and from there they will be loaded on a cargo ship headed to Madagascar. Once there, they will be collected by the local Rotary Club of Tamatave and delivered to a Lutheran hospital in Antananarivo.

Rotary meetings are held every Wednesday morning at 8 am, except the last Wednesday of the month, at The Ridges Cook-Albert Fuller Center in Baileys Harbor. For more information visit doorcountynorthrotaryclub.com.
