Schedule of Veterans Day Events

The following events are scheduled to celebrate Veterans Day, Nov. 11, which falls on a Sunday this year.

At the new Door County Community Center (formerly known as the Senior Center), there will be a brief ceremony during the noon lunch on Friday, Nov. 9 (the start time will be approximately 12:15 am). County Veterans Service Officer Scott McFarlane will be the speaker and Vietnam veteran Ken Pollock will play patriotic music.

The Greater Catholic Community of Sturgeon Bay holds its annual Salute to Veterans dinner at Corpus Christi Catholic Church 5 pm Nov. 10. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at all four parish offices.

A ceremony will be held in the Sturgeon Bay High School gym at 10 am Monday, Nov. 12, with guest speaker Colonel (Ret.) John A. Scocos, former Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs. The Sturgeon Bay High School band and choir will perform patriotic music. There will be a luncheon afterwards for veterans and their family members.

On Washington Island, the ceremony will be at 10:30 am on Nov. 12 at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center. The island will recognize the centennial anniversary of the World War One Armistice, with a brief biography and ceremony honoring Sergeant Charles E. Gislason. Sergeant Gislason is one of the two veterans the Washington Island Gislason-Richter American Legion Post 402 is named for.

The Peninsula Symphonic Band will present its annual Veterans Day concert at 7 pm Nov. 12 at Prince of Peace Church, 1756 Michigan St., Sturgeon Bay.
