Scholarships to Sail

The Ephraim Yacht Club (EYC) has opened its sailing lesson scholarship program for 2014. The EYC offers scholarships to junior sailing students who are year-round residents of Door County. Scholarships include tuition discounted to only a quarter of the regular price, a free student membership, and a free textbook.

A typical two-week lesson session includes 10 days (30 hours) of instruction for a regular price of $330. Scholarship students receive the same 30 hours of instruction for $82.50.

The scholarship application process is simple, requires no paperwork, and is confidential. Scholarship students participate in lessons on an equal basis with all other EYC students. EYC membership is not necessary to apply for a scholarship. Parents who wish to apply for junior scholarships should email [email protected].

EYC Rear Commodore Jay Lott explained that the EYC has been the beneficiary of a strong fundraising effort by the family of Aaron R. Moore, who passed away in 2008 and was a lifetime sailor and an enthusiastic sailing instructor. In 2013, the EYC’s Aaron R. Moore Sailing Scholarship Fund funded most of the cost of 45 scholarships for EYC students.

“The EYC is a community resource, and we want to make sure that all Door County parents are able to enroll their children in EYC lessons if they wish,” said Lott. “Sailing is not just another junior sport. More than any other junior sport, sailing teaches self-reliance, responsibility, ethics, fair play and teamwork, and builds self-confidence.”

The EYC offers lessons over a 10-week period beginning June 9, in two one-week sessions and four two-week sessions. Lessons are taught Monday through Friday both in the mornings and afternoons. Lessons are offered for beginners through advanced students, ages 7-17. For more information visit [email protected].
