School starts next week

• Door County’s five school districts open their doors for students next week. All Gibraltar students start school Sept. 1. The school will host an open house for secondary school students Sept. 7 from 5:30 – 8 pm. Southern Door and Washington Island students also begin class Sept. 1.

Sevastopol classes begin Sept. 2 at 8 am, while Sturgeon Bay doesn’t get started till Sept. 7, when freshmen report at 8 am and upperclassmen report at noon.

• The Town of Baileys Harbor continues to review its comprehensive plan. More draft chapters of updates to its 2005 plan have been added to its website. Chapters can be reviewed at http://townofbaileysharbor.com/smartgrowth. The town has also begun work on its bike plan and is seeking input from residents and users.

• The Cana Island Lighthouse is getting a big boost to its preservation efforts. The Jeffris Family Foundation is providing a matching grant of $303,412 to the Door County Maritime Museum and Lighthouse Preservation Society for Cana Island restoration. For every $2 donated, the Jeffris Family Foundation will match with $1, providing a third of the $910,236 project cost.
