Screening of Citizen Koch

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County will be screening the film Citizen Koch on Jan. 20 at 4:30 pm. Citizen Koch is a 2013 documentary film directed by Tia Lessin and Carl Deal concerning the political influence of American plutocrats following the Citizens United ruling, and of the titular Koch brothers in particular. The film also focuses on the election of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and his relationship with the Koch Brothers.

Citizen Koch was completed using funds from a Kickstarter campaign after allegations that PBS pulled funding initially promised to it. Since at least half of PBS’ funding relies on donations, it has been alleged that financial support for the film was pulled because the content was not favorable to the Koch brothers, who are major donors to the network.

Set against the rise of the Tea Party in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United ruling, a citizen uprising to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker collides with the Tea Party-aligned “Americans for Prosperity,” a group founded and financed by two of the world’s richest men —David and Charles Koch. As Republican working class voters find themselves in the crosshairs of their own party and its billionaire backers, they are forced to choose sides.
