Sevastopol’s “The Gift of the Magi” Takes the Virtual Stage

Sevastopol’s “The Gift of the Magi” will take the virtual stage Jan. 8, 9, and 10.

At the turn of the century in New York City, a young married couple approach Christmas with mere pennies in their piggy banks. “One dollar and eighty-seven cents,” counts Della (played by junior Alexis Garret). She counts it three times. “One dollar and eighty-seven cents—and the next day would be Christmas.” So starts the O. Henry story first published in 1905. The play, adapted by playwright Jon Jory, follows the couple as they navigate the challenge of finding the perfect Christmas gift with a less-than-perfect pocket book.

Taking the stage alongside Garret are Owen Ensign-Foulds playing Della’s husband, Jim. Also appearing are Sienna Cain, Lilly Turner, Brooklyn Brauner, Lucas Apsey, Finn Mathews, Brynleigh Ash, Alexa Olson, Izzy Wadkins, Bea Dramm, and Merrick Mann. Friederike Buergin Witt is the stage manager, and Ethan Frank is the Musical Director and Piano Accompanist. The production team includes: set design by Klayton Kindt, set build by David Foulds, technical direction by Jeremy Benton, IT guidance by Steven Tucholski, and Assistant Director Mindi Vanderhoof. The Show is directed by Amy Ensign.

The Gift of the Magi is one of my favorite stories of all time,” shares director Amy Ensign. My sister gave me the story for Christmas in 1985, and my love for the tale and the author (O.Henry) has grown ever since.”

“The Gift of the Magi” explores family, love, and relationships by presenting a peek into Della and Jim’s selfless approach to the holiday.

“Eight dollars a week or a million a year—what’s the difference? Does any sum add up to happiness? And if not, must we always be counting?” (O. Henry/Jon Jory).

Sevastopol’s four live productions will be streamed. The show will air Friday Jan. 8 at 7pm, Saturday Jan. 9 at 2pm and 7pm, and Sunday Jan. 10 at 2pm.  The streaming links will be available on Sevastopol’s homepage starting Friday. www.sevastopol.k12.wi.us
