Shanahan and Saron Featured

“Wondrous White,” watercolor, by Karen Shanahan.

For the week of July 19, pastel artist Dianne Saron and watercolorist Karen Shanahan will be featured at the Gallery of the Door County Art League, located in the Top of the Hill Shops in Fish Creek. Shanahan will be demonstrating her watercolor technique at the gallery between 1 – 3 pm on Monday, July 20.

Shanahan, who began working with watercolor about 11 years ago, took yearly workshops at Peninsula School of Art with Bridget Austin. It was Austin who encouraged Shanahan to have her first show in 2005.

Shanahan says, “I love the freshness and transparency of watercolor. It intrigues, excites, and challenges me. I particularly enjoy negative painting, ‘finding’ objects by painting around them – they just pop out like magic.”

After moving to Door County in 2001, Saron was overwhelmed by the colorful landscape and the splendor of nature and discovered a love of pastels. She declares that the breathtaking winter skies that seem to be on fire or the light as it reflects on water and rocks “just beg to be painted.”

Saron has studied with Door County Art League Master Artists Franne Dickinson and Margaret Lockwood, among others. She is the DCAL Board Member in charge of Programs and Membership.

In addition to the Gallery, Shanahan’s and Saron’s work can be seen at the League’s 23rd Annual Juried Exhibit and Master’s Presentation currently at the Link Gallery, located in the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek.
