Sharing the Beauty of the Landscape

“Cherry Bounce” by Sherri Thomas.

Bay Art Gallery accepted artwork from artist Sherri Thomas for the 2015 season.

Thomas grew up in Kansas and Oklahoma but now resides in Wisconsin. During her years in Kansas, her family took long trips to visit relatives and her entertainment was looking out the window at the changing landscape and clouds. These scenes fascinated her and it was natural to begin drawing them.

Later in life, she began taking weekend art classes. It was at a plein air workshop with Dawn Whitelaw that she tried oil paints and they quickly became her favorite medium. Thomas loved the buttery feel of the paint, the depth of color and the ability to keep changing the painting. She also discovered a love for painting outdoors. Nothing compares to the colors and complexity of seeing the subject in real life.

Primarily self-taught, Thomas attributed much of her success to the influence of the prominent artists she studied with including Scott Christensen, Kathleen Dunphy, Dawn Whitelaw, Marc Hanson, Carol Marine and Jeff Hargreaves. Their guidance has helped her develop as an artist with a vision to share the beauty of the landscape.
