Shaylyn Asher Receives Ellie Helm SPIRIT Award

Shaylyn Asher, a sixth-grade student at Sevastopol Middle School, was awarded the Ellie Helm SPIRIT Award by the Door County YMCA Strivers gymnastic team. Asher has been on the Strivers gymnastic team for seven seasons and currently competes at the Xcel Platinum Level.

The SPIRIT Award is given to a Striver gymnast who exhibits the six characteristics that define it – Sportsmanship, Positivity, Inspiration, Respect, Integrity and Teamwork – and the award’s acronym also describes Ellie Helm, a longtime Striver gymnast who won numerous individual, state and national medals for the team.

Ellie Helm graduated from Gibraltar High School and attended the University of North Dakota, where she participated on the UND cheerleading squad. She died in an ATV accident on Sept. 29, 2017.

The recipient of the award named in her memory receives a plaque with the SPIRIT characteristics engraved on it, as well as receiving her national fees paid and money to purchase something for herself.

The award recipients, determined by a unanimous vote of the coaches, include:

2019-20 Amira Anschutz

2020-21 Miya Eliyha
