Sheriff Address Rumors Surrounding Sister Bay Traffic Fatality

Door County Sheriff Steve Delarwelle was able to put to rest one of the rumors swirling around the traffic fatality on Hill Road in Liberty Grove the night of Sept. 2 when a 56-year-old man was run over by a 36-year-old Sister Bay resident while he was lying down in the middle of the road.

Many were speculating that the reason the man was prone on the road is that he was hit by another vehicle, but Delarwelle said the department can say with certainty there was no evidence of another vehicle involved in the crash. He added that a witness saw the man walking 10 minutes before the incident.

“Why he was laying in the road, we may never know,” Delarwelle said.

The sheriff added that he does not expect toxicology and State Highway Patrol Accident Reconstruction Team results for several months. He did add that this accident was the worst he has seen during his nearly 28 years on the force.
