Sheriff’s Department Clears Bureau in Missing Funds Investigation

The Door County Sheriff’s Department has concluded that there was no theft or criminal wrongdoing that resulted in the Door County Visitor Bureau being unable to account for $41,307 in its 2010 audit.

The Sheriff’s Department reached the same conclusion that the Visitor Bureau, its board, and an independent audit all reached – that there is no money missing and that the discrepancy was due to a data corruption issue in QuickBooks, the program the bureau uses to manage its books.

“This is exactly what I expected all along,” said Door County Visitor Bureau CEO Jack Moneypenny. “They reviewed all the paperwork, all the canceled checks, spoke to the people at Inuit, and found no money missing.”

Moneypenny said the bureau’s members have been very supportive since the investigation began last month. He said the organization has taken several steps to ensure that such a problem won’t happen again.

Moneypenny said the Visitor Bureau has upgraded its software package to a more robust version of QuickBooks. It has also instituted the practice of backing up its books twice each day to two sites outside the office and a thumb drive. It has also reviewed and upgraded its financial policies and procedures.

“One of the things changed was that I am kept aware of every financial instance as it happens,” Moneypenny said.
