Sign Up Early for a CSA Share

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs have sprouted up throughout the United States since 1984 and have gained popularity in recent years. CSA involves individuals (called “members”) who make an investment in their local farmer at the beginning of the season in return for a portion of vegetables (called a “share”) throughout the growing season.

Meg Goettelman started Steep Creek Farms CSA out of her own home gardens. She grows a wide variety of vegetables without the use of chemicals, and prepares 3/4 bushel shares on a weekly or biweekly basis. Her CSA members can pick up their shares on the farm or at a location in downtown Sturgeon Bay.

Corinne Lea started Door to Door Local Harvest CSA in 2009, designed with the busy individual in mind, with shares delivered directly to one’s shop or home. Shares contain vegetables produced locally from a number of growers, with additional options like fruit, bread, and eggs.

Both CSAs have shares available, but early sign-up is essential for any CSA. For information, go to http://www.steepcreekfarm.com or door2doorlocalharvest.wordpress.com. Other CSAs in the area include Carmon’s Gardens CSA (www.greens-n-grains.com) and Moonshadow Farms CSA (www.downtowngrocery.com/farm.htm).
