Signs of Spring: Icebreakers Leave Sturgeon Bay

The heavy Coast Guard icebreaker Mackinaw was in Sturgeon Bay March 15, cutting a path through the canal before heading to Lake Superior. There it was to cut a path along the south shore and open tracks in the harbors of Duluth-Superior before heading north to Thunder Bay. The Mackinaw, based in Cheboygan, Michigan, can break ice up to 42 inches thick. Photo by Jim Lundstrom.
