Silk Lamps on Display at Santa Fe Shop

Barbara Woods of Santa Fe, New Mexico, has experience in the textile industry that dates back 27 years and includes designing and constructing everything from ski parkas to large tents. In 1988 she began studying the eastern techniques of Shibori, Katazome, Batik and experimenting with surface design on textile.

The Gutta Serti technique is her preferred choice for silk painting. From 1990 through 1996 Barbara owned and operated the Woodsilks Gallery in Santa Fe. Woodsilks Gallery represented her work as well as works by textile artists from around the U.S. The gallery specialized in custom hand-painted silk clothing, loomed knits and hand-weavings serving a worldwide clientele.

In 1996 she closed the retail gallery to concentrate on her art. To appeal to a broader audience, she developed a line of painted silk lampshades. Woods began designing a silk and ceramic sculptural light. Working with ceramic artists, she developed a line of wheel thrown bases for her lighting creations. Working with slab-constructed clay she carves and forms the bases and bodies integrating color and form to go with the painted silk.

Woods’ silk lamps can be seen in the window of the Santa Fe Shop in Fish Creek.
