Sinking

In collaboration with Write On, Door County, poets from Word Women recently wrote poems inspired by Dave Tilton’s painting “Lake Ice III,” which was donated to the new non-profit organization by the artist and Edgewood Galleries.

Sinking

As the sun rose behind reluctant clouds
we could see where she rested, a shadow only,
just below the surface in shallow water.

We knew we were to blame.
Made reckless by summer beer
we’d run the boat last night
out beyond the harbor,
then through chop until
she drank so much water
we couldn’t bail fast enough
to keep ourselves afloat.
She sank on the shelf of a sandbar.

So it is with all our stories –
waiting just below the surface
to be raised and written.
