Sister Bay Businesses Showcase African Chikumbuso Bags

Ecology Sports and Base Camp Coffee Bar in Sister Bay will host a Trunk Show of African Chikumbuso bags on June 18 and 19.

Through collaboration with The Chikumbuso Project of Ng’ombe Township in Lusaka, Zambia, Chikumbuso bags will be available for purchase. All proceeds from the sale of the bags, which range in price from $20 – $70, will benefit the programs of the Chikumbuso Project.

The Chikumbuso Project began in 2005 as a response to one widow’s struggle to feed, educate and care for her children. Together with a core group of women, Linda Wilkinson, the project director, outlined the beginnings of a community-based organization whose goal would be to meet the needs of the most vulnerable populations in Ng’ombe Township.

Through weekly meetings and training, now more than 60 women have created a micro enterprise crocheting plastic grocery bags into purses, shopping bags, and beach bags. This grants the women a stable income and a way to provide for their families with dignity.
