This information is a bit “stale,” but I feel that I must congratulate the members of the Peninsula Painters Broomball Team on winning the 2017 Hilander Cup Broomball Championship! This is only the second year the Painters have played together as a team and they had a thrilling 4 – 0 victory over a very good defending champion, Alexander’s. Backed by shutout goaltending by Sergey Almukov, the Painters outscored a high-powered Alexander’s offense with goals from Kyle Ouradnik, Ryan LaPolla, Brian Fitzgerald and the youngest player in the Door County Broomball League, Ben Fitzgerald.
Joe Baldarotta, the ice rink manager, asked me to thank all of this year’s broomball sponsors: Alexander’s, Door County Brewing, Horseshoe Bay Golf Course, Husby’s and Peninsula Painters. Without their assistance and support, the Door County Broomball League could not and would not exist.
From all accounts the 8th Annual Short Film Fest was a resounding success! A film submitted by a Taiwanese filmmaker won both of the top prizes at the festival. Shimmer, a 23-minute film directed by Komin Lee, won the festival’s Jury Award as well as the People’s Choice Award. Komin was the proud recipient of two unique handmade Golden Mug Awards which were created by “Thor” Thoreson of Gills Rock Stoneware in Ellison Bay. Chris Milligan of the SBAA, the festival’s hosting organization and one of its 13 sponsors, said, “It was a really exciting festival. Friday night and three out of the four 90-minute Saturday sessions all sold out, and we consequently had a ‘full house’.”
Raoul asked to me pass the word along that everyone is invited to the Scandia Friends and Family Art Show which will be going on at the Meadows Art Gallery through March 31. The featured artists are all residents of Sister Bay or are relatives and friends of people who work at SCAND, and the show will take an entirely new direction as, in addition to paintings and drawings, fabric design, sewing skills, clothing design, rug hooking and knitting will be featured.
In celebration of the Northern Door Children’s Center’s 30 years of service to the community, Radio Station WSBW, part of the Door County Daily News.com family, will broadcast from the Children’s Center from 6 am to 6 pm on Saturday, April 22. The Center will also be open to the public for tours from 9:30 am to 6 pm on that same day. NDCC is asking local businesses and individuals to sponsor half-hour radio segments. Sponsors will have eight 30-second ads broadcast and there will be multiple mentions of your business or organization during the designated half-hour. The best part is that all advertising sale proceeds will be donated to NDCC! If any of you are interested in purchasing advertising please call the Child Care Center at 920.854.4244, e-mail [email protected], or stop by the center.
On Saturday, April 8, from 10 am to 7:30 pm the Children’s Center will also host the fourth annual Super Bowl-A-Thon at the Sister Bay Bowl. Teams of four get sponsors and donate a minimum of $50 per bowler, and they will bowl two games in a 90-minute time slot. Participating team members receive free event t-shirts, snacks and soft drinks. Prizes will be awarded in different categories and there will also be drawings for door prizes.
Mark your calendars for the 13th Annual Village-Wide Rummage Sale which will be held Saturday, May 20. The registration form is now available and can be obtained at the SBAA Office on North Bay Shore Drive or you can access it on the SBAA’s website – cometosisterbay.com. Further information will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
If you know of special events occurring in the village, or would like to publicize birthdays or anniversaries of folks who live or work here, please provide that information to me at least two weeks in advance of the special day(s). Also, if you have any questions about upcoming village projects or operations please don’t hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at 920.854.4118 and my e-mail address is [email protected].
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
