Sister Bay Buzz: Oct. 28 – Nov. 3

By Zeke Jackson, Village Administrator

  • Do you have old cleaners and sprays as well as chemicals and gasoline lying around your house and garage that you want to get rid of? Well, you’re in luck. On Nov. 4, 3:30 to 5:30 pm, the Door County Highway Department will conduct a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event at the Sister Bay-Liberty Grove Fire Station. Examples of acceptable items include aerosol cans, bug sprays, floor care products, metal and furniture polishes, oven and drain cleaners, disinfectants, old gasoline, brake fluid, transmission fluid, paint thinners and strippers, varnish, antifreeze, fertilizers, mouse and rat poison, moth balls, and up to 10 fluorescent bulbs. The following items will not be accepted at the collection site: latex paint, oil, radioactive materials, explosives, tires, batteries, medical prescriptions or syringes, propane cylinders, ammunition, commercial wastes, and/or computer and electronic components.
  • There will be trick-or-treating at the Country Walk Shops from noon to 2 pm on Oct. 29. Participating shops will have a ghost posted on their front door, and trick-or-treaters of all ages as well as dogs in costume are welcome.
  • The Sister Bay Halloween Party will once again be held at the Fire Station on Oct. 31, 5:30 – 7:30 pm. The party is sponsored by the Sister Bay Lions Club. All kids who will be in and around Sister Bay on Oct. 31 are welcome. There will be lots of fun games and prizes for everyone. There has always been an unwritten rule in Sister Bay that trick-or-treating takes place as soon as school lets out on the 31st up until the time the party starts. If kids can come to your house, please put your porch light on by 3:30 pm.
  • The Parks Committee will meet at 5:30 pm on Nov. 2 and a special meeting of the village board will meet at 6 pm on Nov. 3. To receive copies of agendas for upcoming village meetings, send your name and email address to the folks in the village office.
  • Amos the certified therapy dog will celebrate his 10th birthday at the Sister Bay-Liberty Grove Library on Nov. 19. All kids and “kids at heart” are invited to read to Amos at the library from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Reading to an understanding therapy dog is a wonderful way to encourage reading in children of all ages and Amos is the best listener ever. Storytime is always conducted at the library on the first Saturday of the month. The theme of Nov. 5th’s storytime session is “The Nut House.”
