As a course volunteer, people will get to view all the participants firsthand as they run or bike through Door County. All are encouraged to volunteer with a friend or family member and enjoy a great morning or afternoon outside, while cheering on the competitors and making sure they stay safe and on the right path.

Volunteers will receive free food at the post-race party at Murphy Park and a free T-shirt. Volunteers will be needed for just a few hours.

There are also many other volunteer opportunities available in Murphy Park the week of the event.

• A Door County landmark, anonymous for the last 40 years, was re-dedicated on June 26, the final Day of the 2011 Olde Ellison Bay Days festival, at the Community Park.

The landmark, literally a land marker, is a slab of dolomite stone, dragged across the frozen bay in winter and erected in 1965 near the base of Ellison Bay’s “Big Bluff,” the highest inland shoreline outcropping of the Niagara Escarpment in the lower 48 states.

The Escarpment Marker also commemorated the advent of what has become a Door County tradition, the annual summertime visitation to our county of young people from around the world. In the 1920s, professor Robert S. Platt and other professors from the Universities of Chicago and Wisconsin camped and built vacation cottages along Ellison Bay’s northeastern shore. Platt was asked to teach a summer field course on geography for graduate students; and for the next 38 years, hundreds of students traveled to Ellison Bay from the U.S. and all over the globe to study the Niagara Escarpment at its apex.

The bronze plaque on the original marker was lost sometime during the 1970s, and the new inscription, carved into the stone, reads “Dedicated 1965 to the History of the Niagara Escarpment and the work of Professor Robert Platt.”

Speaking at the dedication were Carol Lango, president of the Ellison Bay Service Club, sponsor of the event; geology Professor Roger Kuhns, commenting on the significance of the Niagara Escarpment; and Nancy Platt Rayfield, recalling the work of her father, Professor Robert S. Platt, whom the marker honors.
