Sister Bay Sailors Win 100 Miler

The crew of the “Charrette,” owned by Deanna and John Peterson, which won the 76th running of the Marinette and Menominee Yacht Club’s 100 Miler event July 28.

The Beneteau First 38 “Charrette” owned by Deanna and John Peterson, summer residents of Sister Bay, won the 76th running of the Marinette and Menominee Yacht Club’s 100 Miler event.

The race started July 28 in light winds and circled Green Island, the Fish Creek Bell, Horseshoe Island and Chambers Island before returning to Menominee. The first boats finished around 10 pm. Charrette’s margin of victory was only 38 seconds on corrected time after more than 13 hours of racing with most of the fleet coming in within minutes of each other.

“This was a real team effort under some exhausting conditions. Winning the race came down to perfect execution of the critical maneuvers practiced over and over in preparation for this race. That and the fact that the crew never stopped working the boat for every speed advantage possible,” John said after the race.

In addition to the Petersons, the crew consisted of Alex Zalar, Matt Smith, Isak Peterson, Camille Morley and Woody Heidler, who are all senior sailing instructors at the Ephraim Yacht Club (EYC).

EYC is a community sailing center; in 2011 the EYC taught 252 student sessions to over 200 youth and adults.
