Ski By Candlelight at Newport

Newport State Park will hold its 32nd annual Candlelight Ski, Hike and Snowshoe event Feb. 12, 5:30-8 pm, when part of the trail will come alive by candlelight to guide participants through a glowing, magical winter wonderland.

Newport Wilderness Society volunteers will place 300-plus candles along a 1.5-mile wooded trail section. The trail’s terrain is flat and suited for all experience levels. Take a small flashlight or headlamp to assist in putting on equipment or finding your vehicle after.

Start at the picnic-area parking lot (Lot 3) anytime between 5:30 and 7:30 pm. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with directions. At the end of the lit trail, warm up by a bonfire with hot cocoa that will be available at the outdoor shelter building.

The event is free, but a Wisconsin State Park vehicle-admission sticker is required. It will be held with or without adequate skiing snow – only extremely cold temperatures or unsafe trail conditions will cancel the event. Visit friendsofnewport.org to learn more or volunteer for this event.
