Ski for Free at Crossroads

The Crossroads at Big Creek and Door County Silent Sports Alliance partnership has expanded the “ski-for-free” program at Crossroads. As their holiday gift to visitors, Crossroads will loan skis and snowshoes free of charge every afternoon from Dec. 28 through Jan. 2 (except New Year’s Day).

Thanks to Friends of Crossroads (and some generous grants), Crossroads can supply skis, boots and poles in a range of sizes from young children to large adult. As a result of a 4-H project, they also maintain an assortment of snowshoes. Volunteers from Crossroads and DCSSA will help fit participants in the proper sizes and share safety tips.

Then, from Jan 8 to March 15 and if snow conditions are right, the ski-for-free program will continue on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 3:30 pm. Check crossroadsatbigcreek.org to see the trail conditions.

On Dec. 24 at 2:30, Crossroads will hold a “Greeting Card Birds” lecture at the Collins Learning Center. Over the years, they’ve collected an array of holiday cards with images of birds. During this lecture, visitors will learn about the birds (mostly local) depicted on these cards.

The trails at Crossroads are free and open to the public, but hikers, bikers and snowshoers should use designated hiking trails. The Collins Learning Center, located at 2041 Michigan St. in Sturgeon Bay, is open 2 – 4:30 pm daily, but will be closed Dec. 25, 26 and 27.
