Slide Presentation in Conjunction with Tribal Textile Exhibition

In conjunction with the exhibit “Tribal Textiles of Southwest China,” at Peninsula School of Art, 3900 County Road F in Fish Creek, Brian and Jeanee Linden will present a slide show of their travels to the region where these rare textiles were obtained, on Thursday, September 4 from 7 – 8:30 pm at the school. The presentation is free and open to the public.

The Lindens, of the Linden Gallery in Ellison Bay, have visited the Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces annually for the past several years in their search for unique works. The focus of the exhibit and the slide presentation is the people and handiwork of the Miao, Yi, Dong, Bai, Yao and Zhuang ethnic minority groups.

The “Tribal Textiles of Southwest China” displays a wide range of textiles – from highly embellished, antique clothing produced for festivals, to everyday garments that feature delicate, symbolic embroidery.

China’s ethnic minorities make up about eight percent of the country’s population. According to Jeanee Linden, the ethnic groups were forced to inhabit the less desirable, mountainous regions of their country since the 18th century. In the last decade, tourism has begun to reveal the ethnic groups’ rich culture to the outside world.

“Tribal Textiles of Southwest China” is the second in a trio of textile exhibits on Peninsula School of Art’s 2008 Guenzel Gallery exhibition calendar. The Green Bay area “Women Who Run with Scissors” art quilter’s group displayed their works in early spring. Directly following the tribal textiles exhibit will be the metaphorical, mixed media works of Rebecca Pearson, beginning on September 26.
