Songwriting Workshop at Hotel Washington with Julian Dawson

Julian Dawson’s journey in songs has taken him all over the world. In late May, it will once again bring him to Door County for a songwriting workshop at Washington Island’s Hotel Washington and Studio on May 29 & 30. Sunday’s workshop hours are 10:30 am – 1 pm and 2 – 5 pm. On Monday, hours are 9 am – noon and 1 – 3 pm. The cost is $75.

Ferries to Washington Island will make it possible for workshop attendees from the peninsula to stay over just Sunday evening. However, for those who want to attend Julian Dawson and Julian Hagen’s Saturday evening performance at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center, the Hotel Washington will offer a 10 percent lodging discount for both Saturday and Sunday evenings on a first-come, first-served basis.

Songwriting workshop topics include: Creativity and how to find it (inspiration vs. perspiration); Originality – find your personal voice; Words – what can I write about?; Song structure – working alone and collaborating; History – songwriting masters and what they can teach us; Live performance – accompaniment and onstage tips; Recording your songs – studio secrets; and Going professional – the business of music. Julian Hagen will be a special workshop guest.

Dawson, who is based in Somerset, England, is equally at home on stages in Europe, Nashville, Austin and New York. He has written more than 700 songs. In addition, he has co-written songs in collaboration with well-known musicians such as Dan Penn, Vince Gill, Lucinda Williams, Nicky Hopkins, Dennis Locorriere, Bill Lloyd and Iain Matthews. In the two years since he last visited Door County, Dawson released a new album, Living Good.
