LeCaptain Tosses No-hitter

Derik LeCaptain was both selfish and benevolent in Southern Door’s 5-1 win over Peshtigo in a Packerland Conference baseball game Monday.

LeCaptain tossed a no-hitter and struck out six Peshtigo batters on 99 pitches, and in the process supported a local rival.

“It felt very good,” said LeCaptain, who also tossed a no-hitter against Algoma in a Babe Ruth game in 8th grade. “We knew that Peshtigo is a great team and it was a great situation for us for us going into the playoffs. We played a great game and got the win.”

Sturgeon Bay benefited equally from LeCaptain’s clutch performance. Heading into the game Peshtigo had a 13-2 mark in conference play, one game ahead of the Clippers. By virtue of the loss, Sturgeon Bay shares the conference title, its third consecutive.

“Our 2019 Sturgeon Bay baseball team is thrilled to be part of a third consecutive Packerland Conference baseball championship,” Sturgeon Bay coach John Berns said. “Although most people had probably written us off when we fell two games behind Peshtigo in the standings, we somehow managed to stay alive in the race.”

Berns was quick to show appreciation for LeCaptain and his teammates.

“As far as thanking Derik LeCaptain? I thank him for being the quality citizen he has become, both in and out of the classroom,” Berns said. “If our Sturgeon Bay team ever has the opportunity to return the favor, be assured we we will do everything within our power

to help our neighbors to the south.”

Logan Jeanquart had three hits and an RBI for the Eagles. Tyler Kroll and Brodie Overbeck each drove in a run.

“Derik was in total control the entire game,” Southern Door coach Dave Neinas said. “He got ahead of almost every hitter and kept attacking the strike zone.”
