Southern Door School Board Candidate 2014, Dustin Miller

Relevant Experience, Education or Civic Involvement

Served on Southern Door School Board from 2010-2013 with two years as board president and also obtained an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

What do you think the greatest issue facing public education, and, if elected, how would you address it?

One of the biggest issues facing education today is the reliance on state and federal funding to complete daily operations. It always seems the blame game is used at the state or federal level for budget issues.  Changes need to be made to the current budget so we can maintain and operate a high level education environment, instead of threatening to take more programs away from our kids.

How would you address the district’s budget shortfall? Do you have any specific ideas for cutting costs or generating incomes?

When I learned that all administrator contracts have been renewed for another two years I assumed we as a district do not have budget issues. We need to realize that some changes may need to be made, whether it be at the top or bottom. The largest expense on the budget is staffing. We need to find a way to bring staffing cost down and health insurance rates down. I hope we don’t lose sight of our small community school. What may have worked in other districts may not work here and there is nothing wrong with that. We have a unique school district here in Southern Door.

What has caused the animosity in the school community, specifically regarding Marilyn Fitzgerald- White’s alleged harassment over “B4 Southern Door”.

I really don’t understand how this issue got this far because this has nothing to do with the school district. This is a personal matter and needs to be addressed this way.
