Southern Door Wrestling Returns to the Mat

Southern Door finished third out of six teams competing in the Schoenherr Duals wrestling meet in Stratford Dec. 4. It was the first varsity tournament for more than half of the Southern Door team members.
“The duals this weekend provided a great starting point to learn from and gauge where we stand both as a team and individually. There was a wide range of skills and mix of experience on the opposing teams,” said head coach Jerry Englebert. “Stratford won the tournament, and showed again why they continue to be ranked so highly with several returning state place winners.”
Englebert said the team is down slightly in numbers but able to fill most weight classes.
“With only three seniors on the team we are young but hard-working and eager to learn,” he said. “This year’s sophomore class saw very limited mat time last year due to the pandemic and the freshmen are just getting started.”
Sophomores Mason Motquin, Spencer Slezewski and Trevor Englebert each went 4-1 and placed second in their weight classes.
