Start Your Very Own ‘Dinner Night’

Friends get together for their weekly ‘Dinner Night.’ Photo by Iris Zheng.

The chaos of summer has passed – it’s time to exhale and call up the friends you’ve hardly had a chance to see since May. Get together, make some food, and play some games!

My friends and I have designated Wednesday night as ‘Dinner Night.’ Two members of the Wilson’s staff offer up their kitchen and utensils and let a volunteer chef(s) do their best. We have enjoyed the tastes of Russia, Thailand, and Mexico.

I, along with a few others, was assigned to Mexican night. My contribution: $5 for the food and a run to the Piggly Wiggly for Mike’s Hard Lemonade. The kitchen was full of busy bodies, cooking up steak and ground beef, chopping vegetables, and preparing homemade salsa.

Euro dance music blaring from the living room, we ate platefuls of tacos and salsa, sampled homemade pineapple tequila, and enjoyed a game of ‘Apples to Apples.’

For anyone not familiar with the game, it’s hilarious, and easy to learn. Each player receives six cards with various objects or references, such as Richard Nixon or Woodstock. Each round a card is placed at the center table naming a feeling or adjective, such as ‘happy’ or ‘ludicrous’ – players choose a card from their hand that they believe matches the card on the table best.

If their card is chosen as the best answer, they win the card; the first player to win a designated number of cards wins the game.

The weekly tradition has become a relaxing, enjoyable, and tasty event!
