Steel Bridge Songfest Collaborates with Door County Maritime Museum

Steel Bridge Songfest enlists the Door County Maritime Museum and the entire Sturgeon Bay waterfront community in orchestrating a sonic event the likes of which have never been heard – “The Great Sturgeon Bay Ship Horn Sound Off!”

“Take it to the Bridge!” the two-day outdoor concert that caps off a week of Steel Bridge songwriting activity by 40 musicians and two preceding nights of Sturgeon Bay venue concerts by more than 500 others, will begin at noon on June 12 with a classic maritime salute.

The nautical sounds of traditional steam horns and whistles found aboard all of the Great Lakes cargo ships in port, Coast Guard vessels, tug boats, private yachts and the Door County Maritime Museum’s fireboat The Fred A. Busse and newly restored tug, John Purves, will be joined by the Bay Shipbuilding Yards and all three bridges, equipped with sounding horns in tooting a resounding salute to the Steel Bridge Festival. Door County will echo from shore to shore with the opening blast of a classic “Great Lake Salute” (three longs and two shorts), followed by a two-minute jam session in which creativity will unleash a cacophony of sound. Horns will stop at 12:03 pm, while some local dogs may continue to howl in response as the 6th Annual Steel Bridge Songfest outdoor concert officially gets underway.
