Festivals abound this weekend in Door County. Whether you’re looking for outstanding live music, docent-led tours of some of Door County’s most remote (and not usually open to the public) lighthouses, or even to stand up in the fifth annual Roofing of the Goats parade, there are too many places to be at once.
Friday, June 9
Steel Bridge Songfest Opening Night
Over 150 musicians will take historic Sturgeon Bay by storm this weekend after a week of writing original music. Numerous downtown businesses serve as venues for this one-of-a-kind music festival as we celebrate the saving of the bridge.
Door County Lighthouse Festival
One weekend a year, Door County’s docent forces assemble to present the 11 historical treasures that are our coastal lighthouses. Particularly of note is the opening of several lighthouses, notably Chamber’s Island, Plum Island, and Sherwood Point lighthouses, which are not normally open to the public.
Saturday, June 10
Goat Fest
Begin the day with the fifth-annual Roofing of the Goats Parade in downtown Sister Bay at 10:30am, culminating in Al Johnson’s goats mounting their grassy roof, a Swedish pancake-eating contest, and food and beverages to be enjoyed.
Side Pork Fest
Rounding out the animal celebrations is this year’s Side Pork Fest. Join other pork lovers in the Hog Wild 5k/10k/kid’s run to prepare yourself for live music, a Kid’s Zone, and over 1,000 pounds of side pork. The fest will be held at Martin Park in Sturgeon Bay.
Glass Blowing Demonstration
Local glass artists Stephanie Trenchard and Jeremy Popelka will demonstrate the art of glass blowing in this free, open-to-the-public event at their studio, Popelka Trenchard Glass Studio. Popelka fuses his demonstrations with knowledge of the history of glassmaking and is sure to make it a unique experience. Demonstration lasts 12- 1 pm.
Sunday, June 11
Robert Earl Keen
An All-American singer/songwriter from Houston, Keen was inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012. Though his 18 studio albums as well as live performances span many genres, his music is quintessentially Americana. 8 pm.
Salsa Dancing
If you ever wanted to learn, or if you’d love to touch up your salsa skills, stop by the Sturgeon Bay Jaycee Hall at 6pm for a group lesson followed by a free open salsa dance at 7 pm with drink specials. No partner required.
