Students to Attend Air Academy on Scholarship

The Friends of the Ephraim-Gibraltar Airport have chosen two students, Cooper Meikle and Anthony Zawojski, to send to the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Air Academy this summer.

“We decided to do something to give back to the community and to grow aviation,” Gary Chaudoir said. “There’s a lot of jobs out there, a lot of people in the flying industry are retiring and there are more job opportunities than you’d expect.”

The friends group sent two students to the academy last year.

The Air Academy is in Oshkosh, and Chaudoir said many students travel from across the country. Considering Door County is within easy driving distance, it seems natural to send students.

“We want to get kids in the right frame of mind early to start thinking about it as a career option,” Chaudoir said.

Zawojski is already on board for a career in aviation. He wants to learn more about the different aspects and careers of the industry.

“I’m really into aerospace and want to have it as a career being an aerospace engineer,” Zawojski said. “I thought the EAA Aviation Academy would have a lot to do with aerospace.”

At the Air Academy, Zawojski and Meikle will build model rockets and balsa gliders, fly a flight simulator and ride in an airplane and helicopter.
