Sturgeon Bay Man Dies in Custody at Door County Jail

UPDATE, AS OF FEB. 15: The victim has been identified as Michael J. Savage. An autopsy was conducted by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office on Feb. 14. Toxicology results are pending and the results of the autopsy are not known at this time. The incident remains under investigation by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.

A 54-year-old Sturgeon Bay man on probation hold at the Door County jail died while in custody on Thursday, Feb. 10, according to a press release issued by the Door County Sheriff’s Office. His name has not been released pending notification of next-of-kin.

The Door County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the Brown County Sheriff’s Office investigate the death. The Brown County Medical Examiner has scheduled an autopsy for Feb. 14.

According to the press release, jail deputies observed the inmate appeared unresponsive around 11:12 pm Feb. 10. They checked on him and found that he did not have a pulse and was not breathing. Deputies then began life-saving measures. Paramedics from Door County Emergency Services, first responders from the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department and officers from the Sturgeon Bay Police Department and Door County Sheriff’s Office responded to the jail. Lifesaving measures continued but were not successful and the subject was pronounced deceased.

No further information is being released at this time as this incident remains under investigation.
