Sturgeon Bay Rejects “Spot Zoning”

• The City of Sturgeon Bay has rejected a request to turn a private home into a rental property for tourists on the basis that such a move represents “spot zoning.” Baileys Harbor resident William Andersen had requested that he be allowed to rent his Sturgeon Bay home to tourists. His request was approved by the city’s Plan Commission and moved on to the Common Council, which voted 3-3. Mayor Thad Birmingham cast the tie-breaking vote against the request, saying the plan amounted to spot zoning.
