Submit Work to Norbert Blei Poetry Award

Write On, Door County has announced the deadline for the Norbert Blei Poetry Award is July 21, 2017. Judging this year’s award is poet Alice D’Alessio. The award honors the late renowned Door County author Norbert Blei and is administered by Write On in collaboration with the Washington Island Literary Festival. The award includes a prize of $250 and complimentary registration to the Washington Island Literary Festival. The Festival is held Sept. 22 through 24 at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center on Washington Island. The winning poet will be invited to read their poem at the Saturday evening dinner, along with Door County Poet Laureate Sharon Auberle and Wisconsin Poet Laureate Karla Huston.

“As a teacher Norbert Blei was dedicated to nurturing the writing talent of others. Write On keeps his spirit alive by providing The Coop, his writing studio, as a workspace for many writers at our property in Juddville. We are pleased to offer this award to honor his memory and to encourage poets at all levels of accomplishment,” said Jerod Santek, Director of Write On, Door County and a committee member of the Washington Island Literary Festival.

D’Alessio retired from corporate and nonprofit communications positions to focus on writing poetry and non-fiction, and has published five books. The first poetry book, A Blessing of Trees, was awarded the Posner Prize from the Council for Wisconsin Writers, for best poetry book published in Wisconsin. Her latest book of poetry is Walking the Tracks, published by Fireweed Press in October 2016.

The theme of this year’s Washington Island Literary Festival is “Exploring Frontiers: Both Real and Imagined.” Authors for this year’s festival include nonfiction writers Dan Egan, David MacLean and Kao Kalia Yang, novelists Rachel DeWoskin and Amy Hassinger, and poets Sharon Auberle and Karla Huston.
