Summer Reading Starts June 1

The Door County Library’s Summer Reading Program is about to begin. The library encourages kids and adults to read or be read to all summer long with at their favorite Library Branch; there are even fun incentives to keep reading. Readers can even choose your format: print, audiobooks, ebooks – they’re all available at the library.

Why read this summer? Summer is so busy, you might think there is no time to read, but it’s a great way for adults to relax or learn new things. It’s also crucial for kids to read to keep up their reading skills when school is off. Have you heard about the dreaded “summer slide?” Ask a teacher and they will tell you; for every week of the summer that a child doesn’t read during the summer, they lose a week’s worth of their reading skills from the school year. By the end of 12 weeks off, they are back to where they were at the end of February! This builds up over time to become a shocking difference by the end of eighth grade.

You can fight this slide at the library all summer long by reading the things you want to read. Ten picture books for the young ones, six chapter books for the older ones, could make all the difference for a kid this summer. Read what you love and keep those reading skills fresh, all while getting fun incentives at your local library.

The Summer Reading Program starts June 1 at the Door County Library’s eight branches. Stop in to sign up, or go to DoorCountyLibrary.org/summer for more details.
